Fattoria dell'Autosufficienza

The Organic Farm and Agritourism La Fattoria dell'Autosufficienza, founded by Angelo Francesco Rosso, his family and Macrolibrarsi in January 2009, is located in the Romagna Apennines, on the edge of the The National Park of the Casentino Forests, a wonderful place, with a breath-taking view and a partly unspoiled nature.

More precisely, it is located in the Mountain Community of the Cesena Apennines, in the Municipality of Bagno di Romagna.

The total area is 68 hectares, largely merged, and it’s mainly covered by woods or meadows and pastures. The land is between an altitude of 550 and 1050 meters above sea level.

The company carries out countless activities including the cultivation of vegetables, fruit, berries, aromatic herbs, forestry, beekeeping, cereals and legumes, as well as accommodation services and educational activities.

At the Farm La Fattoria dell’Autosufficienza food is produced in harmony with the environment

The company is designed in permaculture and it’s inspired by the ecological practices of various parts of the world. Among the greatest inspirations of the Farm we include Sepp Holzer, Bill Mollison and David Holgrem, Jean-Martin Fortier, Charles and Perrine Hervé-Gruyer, Masanobu Fukuoka and Toby Hemenway.

The cultivation of vegetables is mainly practiced with the biointensive method (market garden) from April to November. With a focus on multi-functionality and biodiversity, in our garden we cultivate all the most commonly used vegetables, as well as flowers and aromatics. The vegetables are used in the kitchen of the farm or sold through the Macrolibrarsi store or the Farmer's Market in Cesena.

Various areas of the farm have been terraced: aromatic herbs are grown in the slopes, on the edge between the slope and the flat part there are fruit trees and forest fruits, while in the flat part vegetables, legumes or cereals.

As cereals, we prefer ancient grains. In recent years we have harvested soft wheat Gentil Rosso, Senatore Cappelli durum wheat, Leonessa hulled barley, Germano rye and various mixtures of ancient grains, the latest one is the Bio Adapt. We try to work the soil as little as possible and when necessary we only do superficial works.

Among the fruit trees we count 40 different varieties of ancient apples, 20 varieties of ancient pears and cherries, plums, kiwis, persimmons, nuts, almonds, figs, peaches, apricots, loquats, pomegranates, mulberries, pawpaws, pomegranates, feijoas, jujubes, etc.

As berries we grow mainly blackcurrants but also raspberries, blackberries and strawberries.

In 2018 we planted the first experimental vineyard, a bit extreme for our altitude, but we want to be confident.

We also have a beautiful Food Forest rich in biodiversity, 2 km of swales, water basins and bees for pollination and honey.

Agriturism La Fattoria dell’Autosufficienza, for sustainable holidays or retreats surrounded by nature

Despite being located at only 5 Km distance from the Orte-Ravenna highway, the agritourism La Fattoria dell’Autosufficienza**** is completely surrounded by nature and the mountains of the Apennines. It‘s a peaceful and relaxing place, ideal both to access the nearby Foreste Casentinesi National Park and to benefit from the precious thermal waters of Bagno di Romagna.

The recently renovated building was constructed using natural materials such as local stones, lime and hemp, wood and earth. All furniture is made of ecological and natural materials and designed in shapes that make the interiors warm and welcoming. At the entrance you are asked to take off your shoes and while walking barefoot you’ll already feel at home.

100% of the energy used comes from renewable sources. All lights are LEDs in order to promote energy saving.

Hot water is supplied by solar panels in summer and by a wood-burning boiler in winter. The heating of the building works through a capillary tube system fed by the wood boiler. The entire building also has an air recirculation system with heat exchange, while walls and roof are insulated respectively with lime-hemp plasters and wood fibers. Rainwater collected in the roof is used for irrigation purposes. For all these measures the building is in class A.

Breakfast and meals are of course 100% organic, vegetarian and with products mainly coming from the Farm, when this is not possible, they are purchased from Macrolibrarsi or other local companies.

Open days, intensive courses, seminars and events dealing with self-sufficiency, permaculture, health and natural nutrition, self-construction, yoga, meditation, shamanism, survival in nature and much more are organized throughout the year.
